In May, I posted a conversation with Caitlin Hensley, who was launching the first book in her series, The Inhuman Chronicles. Paranormal Legacy, a Young Adult urban fantasy novel, told the story of a teenage girl who discovers that there is more to her family than even she knows. That novel was followed by the release of Untold Promise, and finally on Monday, the third book in the series, Beast Within. To celebrate the release, I invited Caitlin back to talk a little bit about the book and what’s been happening in her life since the release.
Q (Infamous Scribbler): Tell us a little bit about The Inhuman Chronicles. Where has the story taken us so far, and what can we expect in Beast Within?
A (Caitlin Hensley): The series began with Haily discovering that her mom has kept a lot of extremely important secrets from her, like the fact that they’re both witches. In the first book, when they had to go on the run, they ended up moving in right next door to a family of vampires and werewolves. Basically, in each book, Haily and her neighbors get tangled up in some sort of trouble, and they have to work together to get out of it. And Beast Within is no exception. This time around, there’s a massive mess that involves evil dragons and annoying ex-girlfriends.
Q: Do you outline your books, or write as you go?
A: Usually, I type out a rough outline of the story, then spend a bit of time composing character backstories and searching for reference pictures on the Internet. After that, the actual writing begins, and I fill in details and expand the plot as I go.
Q: Since launching The Inhuman Chronicles, you’ve had the opportunity to attend some author readings and signings. What was it like to be on the author side of the table, and do you have any events planned for Beast Within?
A: It’s a lot of fun to be on the other side of the table, looking out over a group of readers, but, as I’m sure you can imagine, it’s also pretty terrifying. I mean, there’s so many people, and they’re all waiting for you to say something brilliant and writerly. That kind of expectation is hard to live up to, you know? Luckily, at the events I’ve attended so far, once I got into the swing of things, I didn’t say or do anything completely idiotic, and I even sold a few books. Sounds like a win to me. 🙂 So far, I haven’t got any events planned for Beast Within, but hopefully I’ll get something arranged in the near future.
Q: Who is the ideal audience for The Chronicles? Have there been any unexpected readers who have come up to you and told you they enjoyed reading the books?
A: When I first wrote the series, my target audience was young adult readers. I assumed that since most of the characters are teens, teens would be the ones who would enjoy reading my books. But much to my surprise, I’ve got fans of varying ages. For example, just the other day, a lady who was seventy-three told me how much she enjoys my books, and that her favorite character is Nathan.
Q: What is next for you and for The Chronicles?
A: Beast Within is my last release of the year; I’m ready for a much-needed break, after publishing four novels and a short story since March. But in April of 2014, the next book of The Inhuman Chronicles will be released, Lost Souls. And after that, later in the year, I’ll release Discovered Destiny, which is the final installment.
